Tigers can't overcome bad start in loss to Blue Wave
Written by Cliff Smelley/Bradford County Telegraph
Friday, 26 October 2007
It was a battle to remain in second place in District 4-2B, but the Union County football team had a couple of first-half miscues that hurt its effort in a 24-14 loss to P.K. Yonge on Oct. 19 in Lake Butler.
P.K. Yonge-after having to drive just 48 yards for its first score-took advantage of a botched punt attempt and a fumble near the goal line to go up 21-0 in the first half.
The Tigers would go on to hold the Blue Wave to a field goal the rest of the way, but they did not put their first score on the board until seven minutes remained in the game.
"They are not a better team," Union head coach Andrew Zow told his team after the game. "You just didn't come out fighting."
The win puts P.K. Yonge (4-3, 1-1 in District 4) in a tie for second place in the district with Trinity Catholic. However, the Tigers (2-5, 1-2) still have a chance at a postseason berth. They need to win their game against Chiefland on Nov. 2 and have P.K. Yonge lose to either Chiefland or Newberry (or both) as well as having Newberry defeat Trinity Catholic. That scenario-if P.K. Yonge loses one of its two remaining district games-would create a three-way tie for second place with no team holding an advantage over the other two. A shootout would be played to determine the runner-up behind Newberry. READ MORE

Tigers pull off stunner, defeat Celtics in OT

Mistakes cost them the chance to win the game in regulation, but the Union County football team came up with the clutch plays it needed in overtime to defeat the fifth-ranked Trinity Catholic Celtics 29-28 on Oct. 5 in Lake Butler.
The win-the Tigers' first against Trinity-keeps Union (2-4) in the chase for a playoff spot with a 1-1 district record (they are tied for second with Trinity Catholic behind Newberry). It came about because of head coach Andrew Zow's decision to go for two in overtime.
Jordan Clyatt's 6-yard touchdown reception from Chris Alexander on a fourth-down play pulled the Tigers within one after Trinity scored first in overtime. Kicker Cody Bogard trotted out onto the field for the ensuing extra-point kick, but Zow called a time out before deciding not to give Trinity's offense another chance. The Union offense lined up for the two-point conversion, with fullback Justin Hanson bulling his way into the end zone, capping the upset of last year's state runner-up and setting off a wild celebration in the stadium. Union's JV football team preparing for tomorrow's leaders
Written by Teresa Stone-Irwin/Bradford County Telegraph

Ask coach Ivory Hunter and he'll tell you that this season, the members of the Union County High School junior varsity football team have played their hearts out.
The season hasn't fared too well for the Tigers who have come up with only one win so far against Hawthorne-and a big win at that-39-0.
The biggest problem this season is the small number on the playing field.
"We don't have a lot of depth," Hunter said, "and we are outnumbered on the field against teams who can afford to substitute players when our guys have to hang in there and play the entire game."
But more than anything, Hunter and assistant coach Steve Kelly agree that the boys out there now have learned to play together as a team.
Both Hunter and Kelly-correctional officers and middle and high school student mentors-are teaching the team self-discipline and preparing them to move on into varsity play.
"When you have a group of players that cannot get along and are not disciplined for the game, it's a reflection on the team as a whole," Hunter said.
One thing the coaches are working on is players showing selfishness on the field. This is something the coaches have begun to see progress in correcting, and the boys are realizing that uniting together on the playing field is what will win games for them.  READ MORE
