LAKE BUTLER — During Friday night's District 4-2B opener it looked like Newberry's Ryan Brown and Union County's Deven Perry were playing a game of one-on-one.

But it was Brown, playing on a sore hamstring and an injured shin, who ran 26 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns and added an 89-yard kickoff return for a score who finished with the upper hand.

Newberry ran for just 146 yards, but was able to chew up a lot of clock on its opening drive and on its last possession to edge Union County 21-18.

Perry totaled 184 rushing yards on 22 carries and a pair of touchdowns and also caught a scoring pass for the Tigers (2-2, 0-1). Newberry (3-1, 1-0), last year's Class 2B state runner-ups, has now won three straight meetings with Union County. READ MORE

Tigers Withstand Late Rally to defeat Warriors 34-24

It had been a struggle to run the ball all night long, but head coach Andrew Zow was hoping his Union County Tigers could just gain enough yards to pick up a first down or two, allowing quarterback Chris Alexander to take a knee and run the clock out on a hard-fought victory.
Zow got more than he bargained for-though he wasn't complaining-when Deven Perry broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a cushion and a 34-24 win over West Nassau on Sept. 19 in Callahan.
The Tigers (2-1), who had rushed for just 51 yards up to that point, were able to build a big first-half lead, taking advantage of turnovers. West Nassau, however, closed the gap to four with 8:15 left to play and threatened to take the lead in the game's last two minutes.
It was up to Union's defense to make another big play. The unit responded with not just one, but two big plays. An interception initially put an end to a Warriors drive that had reached the Union 23-yard line, but a fumble on the return gave the ball back to West Nassau at the 35. Two plays later, though, Nevin Johns recovered his second fumble of the game for the Tigers. READ MORE

This Friday the Union County Tigers faced off with the West Nassau Warriors in Callahan. It was a perfect evening for a football game and both teams came out ready to play. The Warriors won the toss and elected to receive the kickoff. The Tiger defense

was fired up, but could not contain the Warriors, and they got on the board first with 6 points.

It didn't take long for the Tigers to answer back. With plays from the Tigers' running game and pass plays…members of the team like #7 Adam Cason, and #20 Ruben Williams were able to get the team into scoring position. The Tigers' first TD was made by #4 Chris Alexander on a quarterback keeper.

A fumbled snap by the Warriors a few plays later allowed #77 Aaron McRae to scoop the ball up and head toward the end zone, putting them in great field position and extending their lead.

On the Tigers' next kickoff, the Warriors returned the ball as the first quarter of play ended. The Warriors found themselves deep in their own territory looking at a first and long due to an illegal block in the back. They went for the pass only to have it intercepted by Tigers' player SJ Simmons, #1.
